How I Journal: Planning and Points

Hi, everyone! So sorry for the lack of posts the past few weeks! As you may have seen in a recent update, things are back on track now and updates are resuming!

As I’ve been away, I’ve started journaling. I’m the worst about remembering to write in my journal, and I tend to keep it up for the first few initial days, but then I forget or feel like I don’t have anything to write about. Lately, I’ve been keeping sort of a “minimalist” journal layout that allows me to write down the main points and highlights of my day as well as plan the next day. At the beginning of each month, I create a calendar, and at the beginning of each week, I sometimes create a to-do list of things I’d like to accomplish over the week. So far, this layout has helped me keep up with my journal since I have more than one thing to do on each page. I also write out good things that happened that day or things that made me happy!

Here’s an example of how I write my daily pages:

And what my monthly calendar pages look like:

And, finally, how my weekly to-do lists look:

I’ve only recently gotten a job, so until now, I haven’t had a ton of things to write about on a day-to-day basis. I always feel like I never have anything to talk about when I journal, and that’s one of the things that has kept from having and maintaining a journal. This type of journaling has really helped me stick with it and feel like I’m doing something each day. Even if all I’ve done is shower or make brownies, being able to write down a few things each day has helped me want to keep a journal, and I think that having my journal has helped me want to do more so that I can write more. So far, it’s been a pretty positive cycle, and I really want to keep it up!

Do you have a journal? How do you style and lay out your pages? Do you do something specific like I do, or do you do something different each time? If you don’t keep a journal, is there a reason? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I’m not the best with to-do lists. I do keep a general one in the reminders app on my laptop – and also use the calendar app to be slightly more specific (though I usually use it for any editing jobs I get). I’ve never considered writing down what I’ve done in the day, but maybe I should, as it would be a positive enforcement thing for me. Though I wonder, in the third screenshot, one of the bullet points is a circle as opposed to the arrows – why is this? It has struck me curious, hmm.

    1. I’ve really found that using a to-do list helps me a lot because I use it for small things that I need to get done, like cleaning up around the house or watering my plants. I’m the type of person who feels compelled to do something once I’ve written it down, so making lists helps a lot. I also think that writing down what I’ve done really has been positive for me, so I definitely recommend it! I didn’t mention this in my post (although now I think I should have), but the circle bullet point in the “Tomorrow” section is something that is schedule or needs to be done at or before a certain time, like waking up or going to an appointment, and arrows are things that aren’t really time sensitive!
